The Socialist Democratic Party (DPS), which has been ruling the country for 30 years, received the most votes in the general elections in Montenegro, which took place on 30 August and participated in 76.68% of registered voters. However, as the DPS did not send enough MPs to parliament to form the government, the opposition parties are expected to unite and form the government by gaining the majority.

Among the reasons why the DPS has received less than expected votes are the high rate of impact of the economy by the coronavirus and the enactment of the Law on Religious Freedom, which has recently caused DPS leader and also  Milo Djukanovic to have problems with the Serbian Church and Serbs living in the country.
